This original chimney stood in Shifflet Hollow and was part of a home that existed before the boundaries of Shenandoah National Park were finalized. When the chimney eventually collapsed, bricks from the structure were carefully preserved and later incorporated into the memorial monument. As one of the few remaining physical connections to the former mountain community, the chimney serves as a reminder of the families who once lived in Shifflet Hollow and helps preserve their history for future generations.
